Scientific Name: Ephebopus uatuman
Common Name: Emerald Skeleton Tarantula
Origin: Brazil (Amazon Rainforest)
Classification: New World
Lifestyle: Fossorial (burrowing)

Appearance:

  • Notable for its metallic green to olive carapace and light banding on the legs, giving it the “skeleton” nickname.

  • The greenish sheen is most vibrant in good lighting and freshly molted specimens.

  • Juveniles and slings may appear more muted in color.

Temperament:

  • Skittish and reclusive—more likely to flee than fight.

  • Can be defensive if cornered, especially when protecting its burrow.

  • Fast and not ideal for handling.

Unique Trait:

  • Like others in the genus Ephebopus, it possesses urticating hairs on its pedipalps, not the abdomen—a rare trait among tarantulas.

Enclosure Tips:

  • Provide 4–6 inches of moist, compactable substrate for burrowing.

  • Keep humidity around 75–85%, temperature 75–80°F (24–27°C).

  • Offer a cork bark hide or starter burrow.

Notes:

  • Less common in the hobby than E. murinus (Skeleton Tarantula) or E. cyanognathus (Blue Fang).

  • Appreciated for its subtle yet beautiful green coloration and reclusive nature.
