Common Name: Blue Vietnam Tarantula (or Asian Smokey Earth Tiger)
Origin: Vietnam
Classification: Old World
Lifestyle: Fossorial (burrowing)

Appearance:

  • Dark, velvety black to charcoal body with a blue or violet iridescent sheen, especially noticeable after a fresh molt and under strong lighting.

  • Juveniles may appear more brownish before developing the adult coloration.

  • Leg span typically ranges 5–6 inches in adulthood.

Temperament:

  • Extremely defensive and fast—classic Old World behavior.

  • Will readily strike or retreat to its burrow when threatened.

  • Not recommended for handling under any circumstances.

Enclosure Tips:

  • Provide deep substrate (6+ inches) for burrowing.

  • Likes to web up the entire burrow entrance and sometimes parts of the enclosure.

  • Humidity should be around 70–80%, with good ventilation. Temps: 75–80°F (24–27°C).

Notes:

  • Known for its vibrant blue sheen, which can rival that of more expensive species like Haplopelma lividum.

  • Sometimes confused with Chilobrachys fimbriatus or C. sp. electric blue, but dyscolus tends to be darker overall.

  • Best suited for experienced keepers due to its speed, defensiveness, and environmental needs.
