Zebra Isopods (Armadillidium maculatum)
Zebra Isopods, scientifically known as Armadillidium maculatum, are one of the most visually striking and popular species in the isopod hobby. Native to southern France, these isopods are instantly recognizable by their bold black and white striping, which gives them a zebra-like appearance and makes them stand out in any bioactive setup or display enclosure.
They are part of the Armadillidium genus, meaning they can roll into a tight ball (conglobate) when disturbed, offering protection from predators and drying out. Zebra Isopods thrive in well-ventilated enclosures with moderate to high humidity, plenty of leaf litter, and lots of hiding places like cork bark and moss. While they can be a little shy at first, a well-established colony will become more active and visible over time.
Zebra Isopods are excellent for bioactive terrariums, especially with reptiles, amphibians, or invertebrates. They help break down organic waste, keeping enclosures clean and healthy. With their eye-catching patterns and practical benefits, they’re a favorite among both beginners and seasoned isopod keepers.
