How to Start Your Fruit Fly Culture

Step 1 – Prepare Your Media

Add the included fruit fly media to your 32 oz. deli cup. Mix with the appropriate amount of water according to the media preparation instructions until the desired consistency is achieved.

Step 2 – Add the Excelsior

Place the included fine excelsior inside the container, positioning it above the media to provide climbing and resting surfaces for adult fruit flies.

Step 3 – Introduce Your Starter Flies

Add healthy adult fruit flies from an existing producing culture. Flightless or wingless varieties are generally preferred for easier handling and feeding.

Step 4 – Secure the Mesh Lid

Attach the ventilated mesh lid securely to help prevent escapes while allowing adequate airflow.

Step 5 – Allow Your Culture to Establish

Keep the culture in a suitable location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Development times vary depending on the fruit fly species and environmental conditions.

Step 6 – Harvest & Maintain

Once your culture begins producing new adult flies, harvest feeders as needed. Start additional cultures regularly to maintain a reliable feeder supply.

Compatible Fruit Fly Species

🪰 Drosophila melanogaster – A smaller fruit fly species commonly used for dart frogs, tiny tarantula slings, small mantises, and other miniature insectivores. Generally reproduces faster than D. hydei under comparable conditions.

🪰 Drosophila hydei – A larger fruit fly species ideal for animals requiring slightly larger feeder insects. Commonly used for juvenile mantises, tarantula slings, small geckos, and other suitable insectivores.
