Flake Soil – Premium Fermented Hardwood Substrate

Available in 4" x 6" & 6" x 9" Bags | Khaveman's Reptiles

Give your bioactive ecosystem a nutrient-rich foundation with Premium Flake Soil from Khaveman's Reptiles!

Flake soil is a specially fermented hardwood-based substrate commonly used for beetle larvae, isopods, millipedes, and other wood-consuming invertebrates. Through the fermentation process, hardwood material begins breaking down into a softer, more digestible organic substrate.

Unlike traditional soil, properly fermented flake soil provides decomposed wood material that can serve as both a habitat component and a food source for suitable detritivorous invertebrates.

Whether you're raising beetle larvae, maintaining isopod colonies, or creating a naturalistic bioactive enclosure, flake soil is an excellent addition to your setup!

Why Choose Flake Soil?

🪲 Excellent for Beetle Larvae – Fermented hardwood provides an important food source and growing medium for many species of wood-feeding beetle larvae.

🌿 Perfect for Bioactive Setups – Adds decomposed organic material to suitable naturalistic terrariums and invertebrate habitats.

🍂 Great for Isopods & Millipedes – Provides decomposed hardwood material that can supplement the diets of compatible detritivorous species.

💧 Supports Moisture Retention – Helps maintain moisture within the substrate while allowing for species-appropriate humidity management.

🌱 Naturally Fermented Hardwood – The fermentation process helps break down wood fibers, making the material more accessible to wood-consuming invertebrates.

🪵 Ideal for Custom Substrate Blends – Combines well with KhaveDirt™, KhaveLeaf™, and other suitable organic substrate components.

How to Use

For Beetle Larvae: Add flake soil to a suitable rearing container and maintain the appropriate moisture level for your beetle species. Many wood-feeding beetle larvae consume fermented hardwood as they develop. Replace depleted substrate as needed.

For Isopod Colonies: Mix flake soil into your existing substrate or add a small amount to designated feeding areas to provide additional decomposed wood material.

For Millipedes: Incorporate flake soil into a species-appropriate substrate blend alongside decomposed hardwood and leaf litter. Ensure the substrate provides adequate depth for burrowing and molting.

For Bioactive Terrariums: Mix with KhaveDirt™, KhaveLeaf™, and other suitable botanicals to increase the amount of decomposed organic material available to your cleanup crew.

Storage & Care

  • Store in a cool location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Maintain appropriate moisture levels when using flake soil for beetle larvae or other moisture-dependent species.

  • Avoid waterlogged or stagnant conditions.

  • Monitor stored material for unwanted mold, pests, or signs of continued fermentation.

  • Allow freshly fermented material to fully stabilize before introducing animals.

Please Note

Each order comes packaged in your choice of a 4" x 6" or 6" x 9" bag.

Flake soil is an organic product. Color, texture, particle size, moisture content, and appearance may vary between batches.

Different beetle, isopod, and millipede species have different dietary and substrate requirements. Flake soil may serve as a primary larval substrate for certain beetle species but should not automatically be considered a complete diet for every invertebrate.

Always verify that the material is fully fermented, stabilized, and suitable for your animals before use.
